2010 Draft

Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints on a well deserved victory in Miami.

I am curious about what the fan consensus needs are for the Texans in the draft and free agency and thought it might be interesting to speculate on who will be available on the market and when we select at 19 or 20 (coin flip on draft day with Atlanta). My views are not news. We need help in the secondary (especially if DRob skips town), interior defensive line help of the run stuffing variety ala Casey Hampton, interior offensive line help of the run blocking variety to shore up guard and center, another outside linebacker with coverage skills that can play the run and another running back in the event Arians Foster cannot be the big back we need. As a luxury pick, I think adding another wide receiver would be prudent (not a luxury if we lose Kevin Walter).

I am of the mind that Steve Slaton will be given every opportunity to earn his job back. He knows the offense and can be a solid receiving threat. Given that position, I do not think the Texans will take a running back early unless a value pick falls to them (i.e. I do not see us drafting CJ Spiller or Jonathan Dwyer in the first round). I could see a third round pick of Toby Gerhart from Stanford.

Thoughts?

I think CJ Spiller is a high risk high reward type of player but would not mind the risk.  I  would also like to see the Texans go out and sign a veteran running  back like Thomas Jones or maybe Brian Westbrook if the price is right , I realize they are getting up there in age and Westbrook has some health concerns,  but a steady veteran in the locker room and their  leadership would be a great addition to that offense and team. Slaton could be more of a change of pace back and maybe even be a slot receiver at times. He could play more of a Reggie Bush type role. The Texans definitely have some holes in their secondary but I think the defense has made great strides the past few years and some of their younger players will only get better. A veteran running back   in addition to the play of Schaub might be enough to get the Texans  over the hump and into the playoffs while molding a young guy like Spiller for the future. A guy that can close games in the 4th quarter  by  gaining  3 plus yards a carry and more importantly hold on to the ball is vital in NFL. I think Thomas Jones is more than capable of that role. Another interesting free agent addition for thought would be the addition of Terrell Owens. T.O was not an issue last year off the field and was able to keep his head in what was a ruff year. T.O would be a great number two wide receiver and would really cause nightmares for other teams. It would limit the double teams on A. Johnson and would also stop teams from stacking the box to stop the run. A healthy Owen Daniels into the mix and we are a real threat to make a run deep into the playoffs.
